Abra, a cryptocurrency trading platform, and its CEO William Barhydt have reached an agreement with 25 state regulators in the United States for offering trading services without appropriate licenses. As part of the agreement, the state regulators have waived monetary fines of $250,000 per jurisdiction to facilitate refunds to customers totaling $82 million. Abra has also agreed to cease accepting cryptocurrencies from US customers and to refund US customer balances. CEO Barhydt will no longer be able to engage in financial services activities requiring a license in the participating states but can remain involved as a passive investor for five years. The agreement was led by the state of Washington, which has made its consent order public. Other states will release their consent orders in the coming weeks or months. Abra began winding down its operations in the US in June 2023 but has confirmed that its operations outside the US have not been affected.
